"For his tenth release at Psoma Psi Phi, David Burraston brings us a new hour of Noyzelab recordings bearing the title Octalz. Two sets of three related tracks (KW1octalR and RLDoctalMPP, respectively) that shift slowly between foggy, static atmospheres and looping passages of chords that seem outright melodic compared to Burraston's usual fare in our catalog. Rest assured, Octalz remains alien and distant, defying conventional description or traditional genre trappings, instead bathing the listener in sheets of textures that seem both thin and warm at the same time. Quick and dirty comparisons might mention names like Mika Vainio's Ø recordings or even Oval's 94 Diskont, but deeper and repeated listening will reveal Burraston's inimitable sonic fingerprint, which seems more and more like that of an engineer on some archaic starship - built in our near-future but kept afloat centuries later, filled with green screens and bulky disk drives and overheating analog circuitries. Burraston is endlessly tinkering, considering, refitting and revising the things that serve other musicians as instruments, but to him, are simply tools. His recordings suggest a universal harmony that can be found in feedback paths, algorithmic processing and pure random noise, perhaps the outline of some mathematically definable but otherwise unfathomable shape in the silent chaos of stellar bodies and celestial objects. Octalz is the latest transmission from this surveyor of the frontier, bringing the void (and all of its great and terrible possibilities) closer to us.
