Dave Burraston's newest entry in his expansive NYZ catalog is PMFM, a mind-melting exploration of FM synthesis as only he could facilitate it. Using the unimaginably deep EssenceFM synthesizer, which boasts a behemoth 300-voice polyphony, PMFM weaves into and out of spaces that feel fully elemental. Humming overtone-rich drones shiver and break apart as spasms of textural electricities disintegrate their surroundings. Strange resonance pervades a constantly shifting stereo field that brings to mind visions of parallel timelines overlapping in thin wavering halos. PMFM is as much a monumental accomplishment in the world of FM synthesis as it is a sonic black hole that pulses ever-present on the bleak horizon. A welcome disconnection from this reality, or any other.
